About

Leah Duarte is a writer and poet. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto, where she obtained her Honours B.A. in English and Anthropology before completing her M.A. in English, focusing on feminist theory, postcolonial theory, diasporic narratives, and women in speculative fiction. 

 

The child of Portuguese immigrants, her thematic interests are shaped by her experiences grappling with diasporic distance and the violence of female identity. Her recent work has appeared in The /tƐmz/ Review, untethered magazine, and The Four Faced Liar, among others.

 

Leah is the winner of the gritLIT 2022 Youth Flash Fiction Contest, and her poetry has received a 2023 Best of the Net nomination. She lives and writes in the Greater Toronto Area, where she is currently working on her debut poetry collection mixing Portuguese folklore, religious themes, representations of mental illness, and depictions of girlhood.  Find her on Instagram @leahlduarte and Twitter @llduart_.
